I’m gonna be using a TBS Vendetta and this model will be my first FPV RTF race quad. I Want to get the best option for best Picture and range performance. Between TBS CROSSFIRE micro receiver V2 or FRSKY XSR which one should I use? Or are they different? If so what would the TBS CROSSFIRE micro receiver V2 be for? Thanks, I’m kinda new.
This is a great question, and one that has come up in discussion and testing recently in our shop.
The TBS Crossfire is going to absolutely be the best setup in terms of range and bells/whistles. It features an OLED Display, easy, wireless firmware updates, rssi mode, lost mode, complete and easy output mapping, multiple protocol outputs and more.
The Crossfire will also offer range well beyond what the video system on the Vendetta is capable of.
You will need a Crossfire Transmitter along with the Micro receiver to make it all work together.
The Frisky XSR is a great receiver as well, and works natively with the Taranis, or any radio with a D16 enabled Frsky transmitter such as the Frsky XJT module. It outputs 16 channels via SBus on one wire, which is very nice. (the crossfire can do this as well) however, it doesn’t offer any additional outputs.
The range will be much less than with a crossfire because of the fact that it is a 2.4ghz radio system. It will also be more effected by consumer wifi devices in the area than the crossfire.
The XSR doesn’t include a servo lead cable so this means that you will have to make a wiring harness to make it work with the Vendetta. A better choice for plug and play compatibility would be the Frsky X4R-SB which has pins for easy connectivity to the Vendetta (or QQ190)
Both systems feature frequency hopping technology, so you shouldn’t have to worry when flying with other pilots while using these systems.
All three receivers are tiny and should fit inside of the Vendetta with ease.
Newcomers to the hobby, will probably need to hone their skills before venturing into long range FPV. Both the Crossfire and Frsky systems offer plenty of range for park flying and the average racer and can easily out perform most video systems with normal fpv antennas such as the TBS Triumph antennas.
I hope that helps to answer your questions!
