Continued GPS problems with Holybro M8N

Anthony,

I need your help on the Holybro M8N GPS.

The last time we “talked” the Holybro was not being seen by Clean Flight or the U-Center software (U-Blox’s configuration software). You suggested that I try swapping Tx/Rx and I thought that worked but all it did was let Clean Flight “see” the GPS. I never got a long/lat or a fix.

Had an old cheap Neo-6M that was doing the same thing so you and I suspected the FTDI, cable or Win 10 drivers.

So I order a FTDI adapter from you and when it arrived I called FTDI’s support group in Oregon and asked them to tell me how to prove that the Win 10 drivers, cable and FTDI are operating properly.

  • First they confirmed that the drivers were installed and operating properly in Win 10.
  • Second, via terminal software (Cool Term) and a jumper from Tx to Rx on the output of the FTDI we proved that the entire “lineup” was configured and operating properly at all baud rates. I now have 3 working FTDI boards!
  • Third I ordered a 3rd GPS, very cheap Neo-6M again. It arrived yesterday and it immediately worked fine with U-Center. I didn’t test Clean Flight, I would need to take the quad apart to do that but I am pretty sure it would work.

I would like to return the Holybro to you to test and if it works for you let me know how/why. If not replace it. Note: When connected to PC via FTDI, green power led on and blue led flashes on M8N but no lat/long or lock in U-Center).

Let me know how to proceed and this is the last hurdle before I can post my build pic’s and the weather in Evergreen is getting nice!

Thanks for all you do,

Steve

Hi Steve,  This question would be better sent directly to our support team via Support@quadquestions.com since it has to do with a return.

We would be happy to accept a return,  but before we do so, let’s get Holybro involved so that we can make sure that the correct procedures are being followed for GPS & UBlox U-Center connectivity. If my memory serves me right, you have experienced problems in the past getting hardware to connect to your windows 10 devices including a Taranis Radio and a Naze32, so I am a bit skeptical of the driver configuration on your PC.

Is there a reason that you are connecting to U-Center?  These GPS units are already setup for the best performance with Cleanflight and they shouldn’t require any configuration beyond that.  If you are showing a gps light in cleanflight then that means that you have communication between your GPS and your flight controller.

Have you tried moving outside?  You will notice in this Video featuring the Holybro GPS that you have to go outside before you can get a 3D fix which might explain your problem.
